I am an alumna of the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI (now IU Indianapolis) where I studied health services management and am an alumna of my sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha. For five years after graduation, I worked in different areas of health care, including being a case manager for individuals with HIV and the office coordinator at a primary/behavioral health care center.
I grew up in a small town in Indiana where I currently reside with my husband and two cats, Olive and Kovu (fun fact: we got married two weeks after our college graduation, which was amazing, but talk about stressful!). I love cuddling up with a good book, playing video games, and spending time with friends and family. I LOVE reality TV and have no shame watching The Bachelor franchise weekly with my two best friends. I am a pop culture fanatic, so yes, I probably always know what is happening with celebrities. . . . it is a problem.
For a while, I felt like I was not where I needed to be in my career choice. I knew I loved working in student affairs and was not enjoying health care like I thought I would. Being a student at what was formerly IUPUI, I knew getting back to the campus I knew and loved would be the best choice for me. It was tough realizing that what I went to school for was not for me, but I am glad I decided to go for what I love doing. I enjoy being on a diverse, urban campus where I can grow more as a person. IU Indianapolis offers just that.
My first college job, surprisingly enough, was working for the Office of Student Employment as a student ambassador! I worked with the office for three years until I graduated. I enjoyed working with students with resume building, being a part of event planning, and working with the professional staff. I still have connections with the staff to this day!
The role also made me the local resume reviewer for my friends before they applied for positions, which is still true. The staff always made sure to give me projects and tasks that they knew I could grow from. I was a member of OTEAM, as well, and OSE worked well with my schedule to make sure I could comfortably handle both positions. These roles helped me realize how much I enjoyed student affairs, and I am glad to be back with OSE.
